My favorite season is upon us – Christmas! Christmas music makes me smile the first time I hear it. After about the first week, I’m tired of it and want something new.Now is the time that the same songs play over and over. The only difference is that different artists, in different genres, cover them. However, there is a song that I have heard a million times and never liked, until I took a closer listen ( and an added chorus or two) My favorite is Drummer Boy, by Mercy Me. This song has taken a new meaning to me. The more I listen to it. (especially this rendition) I realized that it is a beautiful worship song. Take out the Pa Rum pum pum pums and you get this:
Come they told me
A newborn King to see
Our finest gifts we bring
To lay before the King
So to honor Him
When we come
Little Baby
I am a poor boy too
I have no gift to bring
That's fit to give the King
Shall I play for You?
On my drum
Shall I play for You?
Shall I play for You?
Mary looked at me and nodded
The ox and lamb kept time
Oh I played my drum for Him
Oh I played my best for Christ
Then He smiled at me…
You don’t need to know how to play a drum, do what you know best, play what you can as your best, for The King. Worship him with what ever you have to the best of your ability. Christmas has become all about presents and giving of some physical gift, but even here it says, “Little baby, I am a poor boy too, I have no gift to bring, that’s fit to give the King. Shall I play for you? On my drum . . . I played my drum for him, I played my best for Christ”
And my favorite line, all because, it doesn’t matter what “gift” you bring, but if you do your best, with all yourhear t: “ Then he smiled at me”
